Historic hotels in Tuscany

Castello di Gargonza is a historic hotels in Tuscany, between Arezzo and Siena. More than a hotel is a medieval hamlet with it’s houses and apartments located inside the village. During the middle age a community of wood farmers. Dante Alighieri found refuge in Gargonza in 1304 during his escape from Florence.

After two centuries of battles among the provinces of Siena, Arezzo and Florence, Gargonza passed in hand of the Florentines in 1440. As the outmost boundary of the Florentine province, Gargonza was sold to the Della Stufa family, tax holders of the Medici Family and through a doury in 1696, the Corsi family received the property of the village. For 200 years it lived as a farm and after the second world war a massive rural exodus left Gargonza as a gost village.

Count Roberto Guicciardini Corsi Salviati, to give it’s full name, began at the end of the sixties the rebirth of a tuscan village. “…the restoration began with a very irrational impulse…, transform to preserve” . These were the leitmotif’s of Gargonza’s first years of restoration. After 40 years of restoration, Gargonza has been brought back to life.

All roofs where carefully rebuild with the ancient technics from skilled workers which belonged to the community of Gargonza. The use of chessnut wood for the roofs and the typical red tiles of Tuscany where important ingredients which where well mixed by the respect of history which Count Guicciardini had strongly in his blood.

Today all houses are restored and heach one of them has retained the character of it’s former inhabitants. Niccolina, the seemstress, Guardia, the gamekeeper and other wonderful characters are well retained within the medieval walls of Gargonza.
Today Gargonza has 22 apartments and offers both a B&B accommodation with breakfast and everyday cleaning or a self catering accommodation with apartments from 2 to 5 rooms capacity with fully equipped kitchens.

Outside the village a refreshing swimming pool with a light lunch spot under an ivy Pergola and a typical tuscan restaurant complete our offer.
Gargonza is founder member of Abitare la Storia, hospitality in historical houses and member of Historic hotels of Europe and winner of Castle Award Hotel 2013.
